When Peter McDonald and Judy Malzard trek around Europe on their bikes, they will be mixing a good cause with pleasure.
The Noosa couple, who will set off on their two-wheel adventure on May 9, decided their six-month journey would be the perfect opportunity to raise money for Doonan’s Katie Rose Cottage.
“We spent six months of last year riding around Europe and while we were doing it we realised it would be a great opportunity to raise money for a good cause,” Mr McDonald said.
“We’ve been really inspired by the work of the Sunshine Coast Community Hospice group and the work they’ve put in to getting the cottage off the ground.
“Our aim is to raise $10,000, but the sky’s the limit.”
The pair will ride through 14 countries on their cycling journey, which will start in Athens and finish in Egypt.
They aim to cover about 80km a day, with all their belongings packed into two small side saddles on their bikes.
“We’re getting very good at packing light,” Ms Malzard said.
“All we need is a few changes of clothes to get by.”
The journey will be tracked on the SCCH website, including blogs and pictures of Mr McDonald and Ms Malzard during different stages of the ride.
Great prizes are up for grabs too, for anyone who guesses the total number of kilometres the couple cover.
Online donations will be enabled soon. To give, go to www.sunshine hospice.org.au.
