Before moving to the Sunshine Coast he spent many years in Canberra working at The Australian National University, where he was Professor of Sociology. In thirty years in academic life, he studied or worked in seven universities in Australia, Canada and China. Over and above his extensive publishing and teaching record, his management experience included several years as Head of the School of Social Sciences, Deputy Dean, Acting Dean, academic ombudsman, and external committee roles, such as the Social Security Appeals Tribunal.
